Type D – Brass Base Foot for Freestanding Shelving
The Type D is a single-entry base fitting with a wide circular base plate and no mounting holes. One pipe enters from above and terminates inside the fitting. The base sits flat on the floor, counter, or any flat surface and supports the rod from below without requiring fasteners.
Precision CNC-machined from 100% solid, unlacquered brass. Available in brushed (satin) and polished finishes, in three pipe diameters.
Key Features:
- Single pipe entry from above — terminates inside the fitting
- Wide circular base plate — no mounting holes, sits without fasteners
- Solid unlacquered brass — no coating or plating
- Available for 15/32", 5/8", and 1" diameter pipes and rods
- Brushed (satin) or polished finish
- Compatible with all BrassShelf fittings in the same diameter
How It Works
The pipe enters the fitting from above and is held in position by a set screw. The broad base plate rests on the floor or counter surface and provides stability through its own weight and footprint. No drilling or fastening to the surface is required — the weight of the shelving structure keeps the base in place.
Type D vs Type E
Type D — No mounting holes. Sits freely on the surface. Used as a floor foot or counter foot for freestanding or counter-resting shelving units. Cannot be fastened to the surface.
Type E — Four countersunk mounting holes. Must be fastened to the surface with screws. Used for permanent wall, ceiling, or floor anchoring where the unit needs to be fixed in place.
Choose Type D when the unit rests on a surface under its own weight. Choose Type E when the unit must be permanently anchored.
Which Pipe Diameter Should I Choose?
15/32" (12mm) — Slimmest profile. Refined, delicate appearance. Popular in residential settings and boutique retail.
5/8" (16mm) — Most popular. Balances visual weight with structural strength. The standard choice for most freestanding and counter-resting applications.
1" (25mm) — Most substantial. Bold, architectural presence. Best for large or heavy-load installations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Type D fittings do I need?
One per vertical rod at the base. A standard 2-rod unit requires 2 Type D fittings at the bottom.
Can I use Type D and Type E in the same system?
Yes. A common configuration uses Type E flanges at the ceiling (anchored) and Type D base feet at the counter or floor below (resting freely). This creates a ceiling-to-counter or ceiling-to-floor system that is anchored at the top and stable at the base.
Will the Type D slide on the floor?
The broad brass base plate provides good stability under load. For additional grip on smooth surfaces, a non-slip pad can be placed under the base. For permanent installations, Type E with floor anchoring is recommended instead.
