Type B – Brass Cross Connector for Shelving Systems
The Type B is a cross connector where two pipes pass through the fitting at 90° to each other. One pipe runs vertically through the fitting, the other runs horizontally — both pass completely through and exit the other side. This creates a rigid cross junction at any point along two continuous pipe runs.
Precision CNC-machined from 100% solid, unlacquered brass. Available in brushed (satin) and polished finishes, in three pipe diameters.
Key Features:
- Two pass-through channels at 90° — both pipes run continuously through the fitting
- Solid unlacquered brass — no coating or plating
- Available for 15/32", 5/8", and 1" diameter pipes and rods
- Brushed (satin) or polished finish
- Compatible with all BrassShelf fittings in the same diameter
How It Works
The vertical pipe enters from the top and exits the bottom — it passes completely through the fitting. The horizontal pipe enters from one side and exits the other — it also passes completely through. Both pipes are independent and secured by individual set screws. The result is a clean cross junction where both pipes continue uninterrupted in all four directions.
When to Use Type B
Use the Type B wherever two continuous pipe runs cross each other and both need to continue past the junction. A common application is where a vertical structural rod crosses a horizontal shelf rod at an interior point — both rods continue beyond the fitting. For configurations where only one pipe passes through and branches extend from the side, use Type A or Type C instead.
Type B vs Other Fittings
Type B vs Type A: Type A has one pass-through and one side entry that terminates — branch extends one direction only. Type B has two pass-throughs — both pipes continue in both directions.
Type B vs Type C: Type C has a vertical pipe that enters from two directions and terminates at the horizontal — neither vertical section passes through. Type B has both pipes passing completely through.
Which Pipe Diameter Should I Choose?
15/32" (12mm) — Slimmest profile. Refined, delicate appearance. Popular in residential kitchens, boutique retail, and spaces where visual lightness matters.
5/8" (16mm) — Most popular. Balances visual weight with structural strength. Works in almost any context — residential shelving, bar backs, hospitality, retail.
1" (25mm) — Most substantial. Bold, architectural presence. Best for large installations or where the pipe system is a deliberate visual feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can both pipes move independently through the Type B?
No — once set screws are tightened, both pipes are locked in position. The fitting creates a rigid junction. The pass-through design means both pipes can be cut to any length before assembly, giving full flexibility in sizing.
Is the Type B compatible with other BrassShelf fittings?
Yes — all BrassShelf brass fittings are designed to work together within the same pipe diameter. Mix Type A, B, C, D, E, and F fittings freely within a single system as long as you keep the same diameter throughout.
What is the difference between brass and stainless steel versions?
The Type B is available in solid brass (this product) and as a stainless steel equivalent (Type B-P). Brass develops a natural patina over time. Stainless steel maintains a consistent polished appearance without patina. Choose brass for a warm, traditional aesthetic; stainless for a cleaner, contemporary look.
