Ceiling-Mounted Brass Bar Shelves & Shelving Units
Ceiling-mounted brass shelving suspends from the ceiling rather than anchoring to a wall, creating a floating structure that works independently of wall surfaces. Each unit is CNC-machined from 100% solid, unlacquered brass — no plating, no coating — and made to your exact dimensions. Rod diameters, shelf count, height, width, depth, and number of bays are all specified at order.
Why Ceiling-Mounted?
Ceiling-mounted shelving solves problems that wall-mounted systems cannot. When wall space is occupied by windows, doors, or structural elements, ceiling suspension allows shelving to be positioned anywhere in the room — over an island, in the center of a bar, above a kitchen countertop, or suspended in an open dining area. The structural load transfers to the ceiling rather than the wall, which is often the stronger anchor point in commercial and hospitality installations.
The aesthetic result is distinctive: rods drop vertically from the ceiling with shelves suspended between them, creating a visual effect that reads as furniture rather than built-in cabinetry. This is the defining characteristic of the French bistro bar shelf — a format that originated in Parisian café design and is now widely specified in residential kitchens, home bars, restaurants, and retail environments.
Dimensions & Configuration
All units are made to order. You specify:
-
Width — each bay can be up to 45" wide. Multiple bays can be combined for any total width.
-
Height — the drop from ceiling to the lowest shelf, fully customizable to your ceiling height and desired shelf position.
-
Shelf Depth — the front-to-back dimension of each shelf, specified to your requirement.
-
Total Unit Depth — the fittings extend slightly beyond the shelf depth. Total depth is therefore a few inches greater than shelf depth alone. Please contact us when specifying — we will confirm the exact total depth for your configuration.
-
Number of Shelves — any number of shelf levels, fully customizable.
-
Number of Bays — from a single bay upward, with no upper limit. Multiple bays create wider installations without exceeding the per-bay maximum width.
-
Rod Diameter — 15/32" (refined), 5/8" (standard), or 1" (architectural).
-
Finish — unlacquered brushed (satin) or unlacquered polished brass.
Each shelf supports 80–120 lbs depending on ceiling anchor type and material.
Ceiling Anchoring
The vertical rods anchor to the ceiling via Type E brass flanges — a four-hole mounting plate that accepts standard fasteners. We supply the flanges and hardware for timber joist installations. For other ceiling types, we recommend working with a professional contractor who can advise on the appropriate anchoring method for your specific situation.
Timber joists — wood screws driven into joists provide the strongest anchor. Always anchor into a joist, not drywall alone. A stud finder identifies joist locations.
Concrete or masonry ceilings — masonry anchors (e.g. Rawlbolts or concrete screws) provide secure fixing. Pre-drilling is required. Common in commercial, restaurant, and basement bar installations.
Steel beam or metal deck — self-drilling metal screws or threaded rod through the deck. Common in industrial and loft-style spaces.
Drywall without joist access — toggle bolts rated for the load provide adequate support for lighter shelving. For heavier loads, a backing plate spanning two joists is the preferred approach.
Finishes
Unlacquered Brushed (Satin) Brass — matte, warm, directional texture. Less reflective than polished. Develops a soft, even patina over time. The most forgiving finish in high-touch environments.
Unlacquered Polished Brass — high-gloss, mirror-like surface. Highly reflective and visually striking. Develops a warmer, richer tone as it ages. Commonly specified in hospitality and retail.
Both finishes are unlacquered — no lacquer or coating separates the brass from its environment. The metal develops a natural patina that is unique to each installation.
Augmented Reality Preview
Each product in this collection includes a 3D model viewable in Augmented Reality on any iOS or Android device. Open the 3D view on your phone, grant camera access, and place a real-scale version of the shelving unit in your space before ordering. This makes it significantly easier to assess proportions, ceiling clearance, and visual weight in context.
